University of Warwick academic and alumni recognised in King’s first Birthday Honours
A Warwick academic and three alumni have been recognised for their outstanding contributions in the King’s first birthday honours list.
Professor Caroline Mary Series FRS, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, was awarded a CBE for services to Maths. She joined the University of Warwick as a lecturer in 1978 and later became the first woman in the UK to hold the position of Professor of Mathematics, and only the third woman to become President of the London Mathematical Society (2017-2019).
“Over the years I have had the pleasure of working alongside brilliant teachers, colleagues and students who have supported me throughout, and this award is a testament to them, as well as to the research I have been able to deliver,” she commented after being informed of her inclusion on the honours list.
Alumnus Robert Sanders has received an OBE for services to parliament and his work managing IT systems at the Queen’s funeral last year. Mr Sanders studied Engineering (Manufacturing Systems) from 1992-95 and was also Station Master for student radio station 963 Radio Warwick during his time on campus.
It is a huge honour to receive an OBE for services to Parliament and to the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I have an excellent team around me and would like to thank everyone who has supported me and worked so hard throughout my 15 years at Parliament."
And Professor Oliver Hart, a former Warwick economics student and Nobel prize winning economist, specialising in contract theory, has been knighted for services to economic theory. “I am delighted and excited to receive the honour,” he said.
Professor Stuart Croft, Vice Chancellor of the University of Warwick, added: “These honours are highly deserved for a three hugely impressive individuals, demonstrating excellence across different fields.
“We’re very proud of Professor Series, Professor Hart and Mr Sanders and congratulate them on their well-earned recognition.”
Also recognised were Warwick alumni Andy Haldane, former Chief Economist to the Bank of England, Dr Claire Guest, who has worked for over two decades with medical detection dogs, Chris Jenkins, former CEO of Commonwealth Games Wales and Natasha Porter, CEO of Unlocked Graduates.
Chris Jenkins has been awarded an OBE for his services to sport, whilst Andy Haldane has received a CBE, Dr Guest an OBE and Mrs Porter an OBE for services to His Majesty's Prison Service.
Patrick Dunne, Chair, EY Foundation and Chair, Education Sub Saharan Africa (ESSA) received an OBE for services to Charity and to Philanthropy in Africa and the UK.
